This holiday season, Pet Valu stores across Ontario have been inviting rescue groups of their choosing to participate in Santa Paws Photo fundraisers. Our lovely friend (Tanya) from Pet Valu, Commissioners and Wellington in London, chose ADR and we hosted our event this past weekend.

Thank you to everyone who came out and went above and beyond with their donations. Together we raised an outstanding $560 for our rescued pooches.

Fostering Part Two: Choosing A Rescue

Besides choosing whether or not it is the right time in your life to open your heart and home to a dog in need of a safe place to stay on their way to happy beginnings, choosing which rescue to foster for is probably the most important choice you will make in this journey.

The rescue group you choose to work with will be the one that supports you through the difficult times and having a solid working relationship is key. You should never feel alone during your fostering experience.

How does the rescue group select which dogs are accepted into their program? How do they network and promote the dogs they have available for adoption?

All dogs that are accepted into the program should be assessed for issues with temperament and behavior. The rescue group’s top priority should be selecting dogs that are safe to place in your home and into the public. If they wouldn’t welcome a certain dog into their home, why should they expect you to? The group should have a 100% honesty policy with you and should be upfront about any and all concerns.

Looks for a rescue group who networks actively. Social media sites are a great way of getting the word out about available dogs. Avoid rescues that use dramatic tactics that guilt people into fostering and adopting. There will always be cases that are more urgent than other and sometimes require pleas for help, however, if that is there only method - steer clear.

Ideally, the rescue you choose to work with will have a solid history of placing the right dog in the right home (foster and adoptive). Be prepared to answer a flurry or questions about your background and knowledge of dogs, and your lifestyle.

Does the rescue have a back up plan if fostering doesn't work out?

Be upfront initially with the rescue about what you are able to offer – can you only foster short term, do you have a resident dog with special needs – in terms of matching with the right foster dog. Let the group know if you have vacation time planned. It’s only right that you give them enough notice to make other arrangements for your foster dog while you are away.

What is provided by the rescue, and what are you expected to cover? Crate? Food? Vet care? Training?

Decide before hand what you are willing to contribute. Let the rescue know what you will require them to cover. Most rescues do provide these things, but its a good idea to ask anyways.

The rescue group should have representatives that are well versed in dog training and behavior (or at the very least, have access to a qualified professional). You should be comfortable that they have the knowledge to assist to work through quirks with your foster pooch.

Not all rescue groups are created equal. Making the right choice, makes all the difference.

Fostering Part One: Am I Ready?

Fostering a dog in need of shelter, love, and guidance is a time-consuming effort, but it’s also one of the most rewarding ways to help homeless pets. Providing a “stepping stone” for animals in search of permanent homes saves lives, helps set the stage for successful adoptions, and teaches you the skills that will enable you to help other animals in need.

If you’re considering taking a foster pet into your home, ask yourself these important questions.

What If It Doesn't Work Out?

If you have decided that fostering is right for you and feel prepared for the experience, you may still encounter obstacles to a positive outcome for your foster pet. These may include unknown behavior problems that are difficult to modify; illness; injury or unexpected death; the foster pet’s non-acceptance of pets already in the household (even after a reasonable acclimation period); or existing pets’ non-acceptance of the foster pet.

Because dogs passed from home to home or repeatedly returned tend to suffer from bonding and behavioral problems, you must be willing to allow a significant amount of time and training in areas of housetraining, crate training, leash training, and basic obedience.

If your foster pet has been given ample time to adjust to your home (usually two to six weeks) and still seems anxious, becomes aggressive, or suffers from any significant behavior or health issues, notify the rescue group you are fostering for immediately. Never be embarrassed to ask for help. They want to know EVERYTHING!

Does fostering fit your household and your life?

The health and welfare of all individuals in your home—human and animal—must be considered before bringing another creature into the mix. Fostering a homeless pet should never be considered unless your home environment is happy, safe, healthy, and spacious enough to nurture the foster pet adequately and retain sanity among the existing members of your home. If any of your family members are contending with allergies, excessive stress, other physical or mental health issues, career instability, financial difficulties, or housing or space restrictions, fostering is not a good option for you at this time.

But if you believe you have the ability to foster, and the entire household agrees that fostering would be a positive experience, your next question should be “Do I have the time?”

Fostering a pet is a 24/7 job. Although you may not be physically interacting with the animal every second of the day, you will be responsible round the clock for the pet’s safety, comfort, and general well-being, and this responsibility alone can be exhausting.

If your work or family schedule is already so hectic that adding another time-consuming responsibility will only create more stress, do not consider fostering at this time. If that new foster dog will spend long periods of time in his crate—periods that frequently approach or exceed the eight-hour threshold—or if you’ve killed your umpteenth houseplant because you just haven’t had time to water it, you’ll want to put those foster dreams on hold for now.

The amount of personal attention needed will vary greatly from animal to animal, but you can expect to spend anywhere from three to seven hours a day interacting with a foster pet, and even more if you’re planning to foster puppies. Teaching dogs the lessons they will need to become happy, thriving, lifelong members of another family is the essence of fostering, and this takes time and patience.

If you and your family feel you have the time and ability to provide a dog with the socialization, exercise, positive stimulation, and training she needs to become a happy, healthy addition to someone’s home, you next need to ask yourself, “Who do I want to foster and why?”

Any animal considered for fostering should be healthy, fully vaccinated, behaviorally sound, and disease-free (unless you are specifically fostering heartworm-positive dogs, or other “special needs” animals). But those are not the only considerations.

The Skinny on Behavior Assessments

ADR performs a simple, humane behavior assessment. Every dog who comes through the organization’s doors is evaluated for temperament and aggression.

While in foster care dogs and puppies should be observed and evaluated for aggression, resource guarding, and obedience. Any questionable or seemingly abnormal behavior should be reported to the rescue immediately. Conversely, don’t hesitate to also report positive behavior. As a foster guardian, you have the added benefit of learning more about the animal’s behavior than possibly anyone else, and therefore, you are also the pet’s best advocate in helping him find the perfect home.

A letter to Santa Paws from an ADR dog in foster care.

Dear Santa Paws,

Since some very nice people already got me sprung from the cold and loud place, and I’ve got just what I need for the holidays (a warm dog bed to rest my mug and quality food in my tummy), I’d like to ask for something a little different of you this year. Here goes (ahem, ahem) my wish list...

I wish that politicians would wake up, smell the kibble, and realize that BSL doesn't work. Good dogs and responsible owners are being punished everyday. Admit your mistakes and work with experts to enact dog laws deal with the real issues. A dog, is a dog, is a dog and we need regulations that work to provide dogs owners with affordable spay/neuter and training programs, communities with bite prevention training and laws that give responsible dog owners a break!

If you believe breed specific legislation should be repealed in Ontario, please support Bill-16. Second reading of the private member's bill is in February.

I wish for people to stop buying dogs from pet stores and websites that are supplied by and support backyard breeders and puppy mills. In fact, I wish that people stop buying dogs at all. The pet overpopulation problem is a huge one. There are so many rescued dogs like me without a home and family to call their own. Consider the adoption option and visit a shelter or connect with a rescue group, today!

And finally, Santa Paws, I wish people would think twice about how they train their dogs. We (dogs) are simple and just do what works. Yelling, poking and rolling (as seen on TV) hurts and does nothing to build or strengthen a deep bond between us that we so desperately crave. Dogs are surrendered and returned to shelters everyday, simply because families haven't sought help from a qualified trainer for behaviour issues (or have chosen to work with the wrong trainer). The number 2 trigger for aggression in dogs, is discipline. Positive reinforcement training keeps families safe, dogs in their adoptive homes, and very simply saves lives by reducing the number of companions euthanized due to unwanted behaviours.

This "Like" Is For You

When we chose to branch off and start our own rescue not quite 4 years ago, with a small handful of eager volunteers, (as we near 1000 "likes") we could never have imagined that one day we might have such a large network of the most passionate rescuers around. From our tireless and dedicated volunteers and foster homes, to the amazing vet staff who care so lovingly for our dogs, and perhaps most importantly - the shelter workers who contact us and come in on weekends to give these dogs a chance.

Ador-A-Bull is built on extremely high standards, and as such, in the relatively short time that we have been around, we have fostered strong working relationships with many shelters and animal control facilities across the province. Because of our ability to lay low and fly under the radar, we have been the rescue chosen to quietly whisk away several “famous” fugitives (ie: Rambo) who might otherwise not have been gotten the opportunity to escape this dog forsaken province.

It warms our (sometimes exhausted) souls and gives us the much needed strength to continue this ‘oh so important’ work, when we receive pupdates from our adopters and foster homes. Know that we very much appreciate all the comments, feedback and reassurance that you give us.

Your words of encouragement mean so much during the times when rescue (and life in general) seems almost too much. When the emails and desperate pleas for help feel like they are never going to end, when we are running low on supplies and motivation, you are always there.

It takes a village, and we thank you for your continued support.

The Ups & Downs of Dog Rescue

Dog rescue, especially pit bull rescue, is the ultimate roller coaster ride. One moment you’re going up, everything is exciting and you’re itching to reach the top. The next, you’re on your way down and quickly realizing, as the ride dips and loops that you might have picked the wrong one. Let me off!

Just this week alone (and its only Wednesday), we pulled a fantastic dog (“good save” as we say), hit the motherload with a HUGE donation of dog food from Nutrience and have a couple of dogs well on their way to officially being adopted after spending months in foster care (ssssshhhh, someone might hear us…).

And then there was the email from another rescue, bashing us for not acting quickly enough to help them save some dogs (sight unseen – how responsible). A middle of the night rush to the emergency vet, after finding a kitten who had been thrown from a highrise apartment balcony (she unfortunately passed away). And, a heads up on possibly having to bring in a “substantially similar” pregnant female – where have all the foster homes gone?

Fortunately over the years, we’ve grown a thick skin and have come to expect that the bad, will always be followed with something good (perhaps a glass of wine, or a shot of tequila). We thank DOG everyday for the amazing dogs we've been able to rescue, the people we’ve met and the volunteers that are always willing to go that extra mile, for us and our rescued hearts.

And though, sometimes the horizon looks dark, when you catch the light in the eyes of a foster (or resident) dog, you couldn’t imagine your life being any other way.

Interview with: An Adopter

Neko was found wondering behind a theater by a police officer, who thankfully, is a pit bull owner himself. Knowing that because of appearance, Neko would likely not survive if turned over to animal control, the officer found friends who could keep him safe. ADR was contacted and agreed to assess Neko for our transfer program. He passed with flying colors and his guardian angels agreed to foster him until his forever people were found.

Enter Jeff - Jeff contacted ADR having recently lost beloved dog Gracie, who he also adopted. He was ready to open his heart and home again to a dog in need. We instantly got the "warm fuzzies" and after several emails back and forth, a phone interview and homecheck, Jeff was approved!

So here was Jeff, 3 provinces away and ready to bring home a dog he had never met.

It turned out that Jeff has already planned a trip to Ontario, so again, sight unseen, he booked Neko a spot on his flight home. We made the 2 hour drive to meet Jeff. He and Neko clicked instantly, and just like that Neko was off to start his new life on the East Coast.

Neko now spends his days at 'the shop' with his new dad, going hiking and laying around in bed with HIS cat. What a perfect match! We couldnt be happier.

Jeff agreed to answer a few questions for us regarding his adoption experience. Thanks Jeff!

How did you hear about ADR?
I heard about ADR from the petfinder.com web site.

Why did you choose to adopt from an ADR/an independent rescue?
I am a strong believer in Adoption over breeders; I feel that there are countless dogs out there without a good home and that people should STOP being so precise in selecting the “perfect breed.” I was looking for a pit/Staffy mix as I have always loved there companionship. But I would have settled for other breeds if one caught my attention.

What attracted you to Neko? This breed? A big black dog (which are very hard to place)?
To be honest, my last dog was a Staffy mix and she passed away 6 months before I applied for Neko, I told myself that if I was going to adopt another dog that it was important to get the opposite sex and different coat (colors). My last dog was beige/white and female, so Neko seemed like the perfect fit :-):-) I believe this is important because if they look different it helps to not make judgment in the new pup based on your last dog.

Did you have any reservations about adopting a dog "sight unseen", after just a short meeting?
Mostly just training and Health, when adopting you never know the full passed and habits of the dog. Once the Health check came back great it was time to get to know Neko and see what his behaviors are like and if there is anything I should be concerned about. I was shocked… he is amazing! It really shows that ADR does extensive behavior tests and is very forthcoming in the adoption process.

Was there anything that surprised you about the adoption process?
The price! I figured for an independent rescue the adoption fees would be much higher.

Is thereanything you'd change/improve?
BSL, even in my home town Neko and I get a little bit or “Breedism” as I call it, lol. Its all good tho… He makes up for it with charm and kisses :-):-) I feel like every person Neko meets helps remind them that its not the Dogs that are the problem, it’s the HUMANS!

Do you have any 'words of wisdom' for someone who is considering adopting a dog from ADR/Ontario?
Adopting a dog is a great feeling, but adopting a dog from a province where they are killed because of the way they look is an indescribable feeling.

Interview with: A Foster Home

Kristin Tweel, ADR adopter/recent foster momma, was kind enough to answer some questions for us about her experience fostering for ADR.

We are so grateful to have people like Kristin (and her amazing husband Manuel) on our team. Their positive attitudes, even when dealing with challenging issues, inspire us. Together, we can continue saving innocent lives.

When/how did you hear about ADR?

We learned about ADR a little over three years ago, when we were looking to adopt a dog on Petfinder. We ended up adopting 2 two year old Amstaff mix named Layla.

What made you decide to open your heart and home to fostering a dog in need?

There are so many dogs in need! But after building a relationship with the rescue over the past three years, we wanted to. We’ve had such a good experience with Layla, we wanted to offer another dog the chance to have a better life too.

Can you tell us a bit about your foster dog?

Our foster dog’s name is Dilbert, or Dilly for short. He’s incredibly smart and painfully cute. We’re not really sure how old he is, maybe 7 or 8 months? He’s got a lot of energy and loves to play but is a total lovebug!

How has the foster experience been? The best part? The hardest?

The foster experience has been really good- we feel that we, as well as Layla, have gotten a lot out of it. The hardest part was probably the training aspect. You are constantly trying to reinforce positive behaviours,.and that includes reminding yourself to be consistent with both dogs. And of course, now that we know and love him, letting him go will be tough too.

The best part is easy! As the dog settles into its new environment and becomes more comfortable, you see more and more of their individual personality shine through. It’s very rewarding.

Was there any sort of adjustment period for you? For your resident dog?

It probably took us a month to adjust. It wasn’t easy at first- it was a lot of work. But Dilly really started to settle into our routine and life gradually got easier. For Layla, our resident pooch, the adjustment time was about the same. She had to learn to share her toys and all the affection! They love each other now.

What have you gained from the experience?

Patience! And honestly, we’ve learned a lot about our resident dog Layla too. Based on what Layla has learned and changed since we’ve had Dilbert around, it was a really beneficial experience.

What advice would you offer someone who is thinking of fostering?

It’s a lot of time and effort at first. But overall, it’s an amazing and rewarding experience.

Would you foster again?

Depending on the dog, we would!

We are always greatly in need of foster homes!

Fostering requires a time commitment of 1-3 months for young dogs and 6-8 months for those that are a bit older. ADR covers all food and veterinary costs, your donation is an open heart and home to help a rescued angel on their way to a Happy Beginning!

Interview with: A Dog Walker

We spoke recently with Mai-Ling Gibson, dog walker and owner of Four Feet - a small dog walking and pet services business in London, Ontario.

We have known Mai-Ling and her resident dogs for years. From our early days with Awesome Dogs when she was taking classes with her first rescued pooch Hank, to having her darling Loula be the feature in a Toronto Star article with one of our co-founders (hows that for street/feet/paw...cred)! Not that we’re biased, but we can’t say enough good things about Mai-Ling, her personal pets, and interactions with any dog she meets (including the fostering she has done for us). With so many dog walking/pet sitting services out there, we figured it time to discuss the important thing with a trusted and reliable/professional source!

What was the reason for starting Four Feet?

The reason for starting four feet was that I wanted to leave a high stress job as a social worker (for 16 years) to do something that would be good for my health, help me be more available to my own family, and to be able to be around pets every day. How does Four Feet differ from other companies?

Four Feet differs from other companies in that it is family owned, focused on positive reinforcement techniques, and I do what I can to respond to the animal's unique needs and personality with customized packages (i.e. I walk a dog named Brodi who also needs work with not barking at people and not chasing joggers or people on bikes - he's improved so much that I can take the baby and stroller with him, though I almost never have the baby when I'm working).

*bing* Brodi is an Australian Shepherd. He knows what he can get away with for his owner and Mai's expectations of him are different. She is consistent. Dogs are simple - they do what works!

What services do you offer?

Four Feet offers dog walking, "relief" visits (letting the dog out, fresh food and water, and pick-up in the yard). I also will go in and take care of other kinds of pets in the home when their owners are away (i.e. cats, reptiles, rodents, etc, etc).

What is your dog training and behaviour background?

I have worked with Awesome Dogs in training each of my rescues. I met Yvette Van Veen about 6 years ago in training Hank!

Yvette used only the most up to date positive reinforcements training techniques in the industry. Her programs offer gentle and highly effective training solutions in London and surrounding areas.

Will you walk dogs that have restrictions placed upon them because of the current Dog Owner’s Liability act, bull and terrier breeds?

I will absolutely walk pit bulls, rotties, dobes, and ANY other "scary" dog. I meet with all dogs and owners prior to establishing service agreements to make sure that the dog responds to me well. It also gives me a chance to take the dog for a trial walk and see how it goes.

Will you walk dogs that pull?

Yes, I will walk dogs that pull and attempt to train them to be loose leash walkers.

Will you walk dogs that don’t like other dogs? What safety precautions would you take?

I will also walk dog who aren't well socialized with other dogs (i.e. who don't like other dogs). Precautions - I don't like muzzles really but if the owner insists, I will. I prefer to work with the dog in the moment or just cross the street and tailor the walk so that contact with other dogs is limited. Typically, I find that the owner's anxiety is the issue vs. real aggression. If a dog was truly aggressive, I'll consult with my experts!

What if a customer has 2 dogs?

2 dogs - easy, the second dog costs $10.00 extra (added to the base rate).

How would you handle a customer who's dog is shy?

Shy dogs - same thing. Really - it's not a whole lot different than how I approach people clients when I was a social worker. It's the same premise - start where the client is and go from there and often. It's as much about working with the people client as it is about working with the canine client. It's all about assessing, problem solving, then progressing. Many of the people who have contacted me aren't contacting me for behaviour issues, but often, one is identified that could use some work. If it's basic stuff, no problem, but if it's more complicated, I'll also refer the individual to a trainer or rescuer who can help them.

Unhappy Banniversary

Six years ago this week, dog owners gathered at Queen’s park on the evening of August 28th. They gathered with their dogs. They gathered to show support. They gathered for one last night of freedom with their canine companions. On August 29th 2005 Breed Specific Legislation (commonly referred to as The Pit Bull Ban) came into effect and dog ownership in Ontario changed drastically.

Suddenly dogs that had done nothing wrong, dogs that were trained in levels of obedience, dogs with ribbons and trophies from national sporting events, dogs with their St John’s Ambulance and Canine Good Neighbour Certification, dog that simply were of a certain breed or breed mix in appearance were deemed dangerous. Ordered muzzled and leashed at all times, menaces to society, and were they to be found so much as frolicking on their front yard if it were to be unfenced, the answer was simple. Death.

Sounds almost hard to believe doesn’t it? It’s scary, but it’s true. A neighbour complaint about a dog that has done nothing but bark a “hello”…if that dog is of a bull and terrier breed in appearance, that hello woof could be considered threatening and fines could be issued along with warrants to seize and euthanize the dog.

A dog escapes a front door to excitedly greet a friend…animal control drives by, if it’s of bull and terrier breed in appearance the dog is in direction violation if the leash and muzzle law and the dog is to be taken and again, put to death. No, it didn’t injure, bite or attack anyone. Simply the way it looks is enough to have it killed…

And people ask us why we choose THESE types of dogs to rescue?

We have known them, owned them and loved them for longer than this dogforsaken law has been in place, and sadly, we seem to be minority these days. Many other rescues and shelters refuse these beautiful creatures due to their breed and appearance - similarly discriminating against them the way the law does.

Don’t judge a book by its cover we were always taught! And the 200+ beautiful dogs, inside AND out, that we have had the pleasure of rescuing and rehoming have proven that to us and others, 10 fold.

We don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! Though funds get tight, volunteers and foster homes sparse, we will always do what we can, when we can for dogs in need.

We are very proud to share that over the years ADR has developed a reputation and level or respect with countless shelters and animal controls across the province of Ontario, and Nova Scotia, where the majority of the dogs we save are sent. We have been featured in various news articles and on local and national radio shows and have always received much more positive feedback than negative.

As many of you remember, ADR was the rescue sought out to save Rambo, the pup who was in the news for so long embroiled in quite the legal case. More recently, we help ensure another newsworthy pooch, Ginger, made it safely out east before the court decision to end her life could be enforced. ADR was also the rescue of record chosen to go in and assess over a dozen pit bull type dogs that had been warehoused at the Toronto Humane Society when the OSPCA raids happened. Our assessment documents were actually referred to by the veterinary staff and legal teams involved in that case. Not bad for a small independent dog rescue!

We have built a reputation for have stable and safe dogs in our program and adopted out because of our high standards of temperament and training of the dogs in our care. Granted we do have to be extra careful because of the current laws, we feel these values are important for all responsible dog owners and rescues alike.

Yesterday we got a call for a 14 month old dog, which dog was put to sleep because we didn’t have the resources to get to it fast enough. We will never know if it was actually a “pit bull” (or some other mixed breed). It breaks our heart when we can’t get to them in time, and it happens almost daily. The emails the voicemails the pleas for help…

2 years ago we took on SEVEN puppies a week after they were born. Deemed to be pit bulls, they were all adopted out of province, and have grown to be the motliest crew of colours and coat lengths, ranging from a 40 lb dog to an 80 pounder - clearly not pit bulls by any stretch of the imagination. More recently we took on a litter of 9 puppies also perceived to be pit bulls. At about 6 months old now they are pushing 50-60lbs. They are going to BIG dogs, BIG MIXED BREED DOGS! The point being, the law we are living with is a law that affects so many dogs, all dogs even.

As a rescuer and bull breed enthusiasts we live and breathe the ineffectiveness of this law. It has been several years since the passing of Ontario’s breed ban, and yet there is no shortage of puppies of questionable appearance, dogs and owners in need of help for no crime other than the appearance of the canine, and people wanting to negate their responsibilities due to issues of financial resource, stress or harassment. This is what the breed ban law has created. A climate where rescue now not only deals with dogs in need, but deals with issues of liability, legality, and the heartache of the seemingly endless cries to save those who have done nothing wrong but have a short coat, a square jaw, or been born into a province that doesn’t care how the animal acts, but more so how it physically appears. Guilty before even considered innocent. Dangerous due to myths and urban legends.

Yet we carry on. There is an ever growing army of individuals who choose to do right by their pets, in the face of adversity, and do without the support of their government and local agencies. Those who have put the time an effort into educating themselves, caring for their beloved dogs and continuing to fight and advocate for what they know is right and responsible. I applaud you all. I thank you for not giving up, for not backing down, and for believing that one day what is right and true and proven effective in regards to dog ownership will be the laws by which we live and abide, and others do as well.

Do not give up hope. Do not waiver in your beliefs. Continue to be a proud and positive example for friends, strangers but most importantly the dogs you know and love.

With each rescued heart we drive out of this dog forsaken province, or put on a plane, we do so with promise that one day things will be different here. For now, they are one of the lucky ones, escaping with their life and the chance to have the future that all dogs should have – somewhere a little more enlightened than Ontario.

Until there are none, rescue one!

Puppy Pawlooza 2011

One dog, two dog, red dog, blue dog...

Thousands, upon thousands of pooches and their people flooded the Plunkett Estate for Pawlooza 2011 this past Saturday.

HUGE tail wags to our volunteers and supporters who came to visit and lend a hand, selling ADR swag, our limited edition 'it's for the puppies!' tshirts, collars and chatting up the crowd about BSL and all things bully!

(Together we raised over $700).

If you arrived early, you probably had the pleasure of meeting our Adopt-A-Bull princess Mae. Alas, the crowds and waves of new friends became too much to handle so we chartered her a ride home so she could relax. We did however manage to snap a few pictures of her getting belly rubs and testing the waters for the doggy dock divers.

Then there was our star BAYNE! This goofy lug sure knows how to make a great impression. SO well behaved! When he wasn't hanging out with us in the shade of our rescue booth, he was walking nicely by our side, politely greeting other dogs, sitting for pets...

He hung out in (ok so mostly went to get a drink from) the puppy 'cool down' pools.

He impressed us so much that his foster mom just had to treat him to a dog friendly frozen yogurt treat.

Remembering Rocky

Nothing great in this world is ever accomplished without passion...

Over the years since BSL passed in Onterrible, we’ve heard it said several times that one of the only “good” things to come out of this law was all the new friendships, and getting to meet so many wonderful dogs.

Rocky Black was one of them. A true breed ambassador who not only inspired his Mom (Debbie) but many many others to continue to battle on the front lines and be seen and be heard and continue to fight the good fight.

Rocky and Deb attended numerous (okay, EVERY) event dedicated to raising awareness about why breed banning doesn’t work. And he always did so with his beautiful bully smile, and no doubt a fashion statement to boot!

We wanted to recognize Rocky (and his mom) for all they have done over the years, and acknowledge the passing of an amazing dog. Our heart and thoughts are with you Deb, we know this isn’t easy.

Safe Summer Fun

This weeks heat wave reminds us that summer is here in full swing! As such, pets and their people are likely to spend more time outdoors soaking up the sun. There are however, many dangers that dog owners should be aware of. Follow these tips to keep your pooch happy and healthy this season.

Play Safe

Be cautious about overdoing summer activities. Even short walks on stifling summer days can quickly cause heat exhaustion. Limit walks to cooler daytime (before noon or after 4pm) or evening hours. Carry fresh, cool water for yourself and your pooch.

Dogs pant to expel heat (they do not sweat). If you live in an area affected by BSL that requires the use of a muzzle, it is important that the muzzle fits correctly and allows the dog to do so.

Mind the Paws
Remember that even on breezier days, sidewalks can quickly become extremely hot. Heat rises from the ground and sensitive paw pads can easily burn. Try to walk your dog on cooler surfaces.

Burns
On that same note, humans are not the only once susceptible to skin cancer. Your dog needs protection the sun as well. Apply sunscreen to the nose, tips of the ears, and belly especial on short coated and light colored dogs.

BBQ
Who doesn't like a good BBQ or corn roast? Beware that some foods can be toxic to dogs (chocolate) and pieces of corn cob, which may be tasty, can in fact become lodge in the intestines, resulting in the need for invasive and expensive surgery. Make sure that your dog does not have access to these items (either from the table or the garbage can).

Leave Fido at Home
It should go without saying, but every year dogs die, or barely survive, being locked in cars while their people run errands. Within a few minutes, even with the windows down, the temperature in a car without breeze or A/C can rise to an unbearable degree. If you feel bad, bring him home a cool treat.

The Dog Days of Summer!

Summer is a fun time of year for humans and dogs alike. Many dogs (and people) love to play outdoors despite the heat. Some homes do not have air-conditioning, so alternative cooling methods must be used. If your dog does not wish to stay indoors with the air-conditioner, or if you do not have air-conditioning, there are still plenty of ways to keep your dog cool as temperatures rise.

Remember that dogs cannot cool themselves by sweating like humans. They might sweat a small amount through their pads, but the main way a dog cools off is by panting. Unfortunately, panting is not enough when it is extremely hot and humid.

Always have fresh/cold water available, whether at home (indoors and out) and a travel water bowl or water bottle for walks or car rides. But of course avoid taking your canine companion on the road with you if you’ll need to leave the vehicle (and turn off the AC or stop the breeze). Even just a couple minutes with the windows down in a vehicle can be deadly for a furry friend!

Also, don’t assume your pooch will know when to stop of take breaks when running/walking/playing in hot weather. I know of several cases of heatstroke in dogs who were having a great time playing and jogging with their people, and when they finally do stop to lay down, it is because they physically can't go on any more. Heatstroke happens fast. I recently read about a Labrador playing fetch in a lake, in and out of water, who suffered from heatstroke due to overexertion.

Tips to avoid overexertion and heatstroke in pets
• Work up slowly to exercise fitness. Make exercise part of the regular routine.
• Exercise in the early morning and late evening when it is (hopefully) cooler. Avoid the midday heat. It can be a killer.
• Offer small amounts of fresh cool water, frequently.
• Use a hose or let your pet swim in a lake or pool to become thoroughly wet before a walk. Evaporation will help keep your pet cool. Be sure to wet all layers of coat, especially double-coated breeds, such as Retrievers, for maximum cooling.
• Watch your pet for signs of tiring and too much panting. The panting tongue out too far will indicate break time.
• Search for shade-available areas.
• Some dogs love having their own kiddie pool in the yard.
• Be mindful of pad burns on hot pavement and metal surfaces.

As much as we (people) love a cool refreshing treat to cool off on the warmer days, dogs do as well! Who wants a dry crumbly biscuit in 30 degree weather? What about a pupsicle?! This is an easy, and healthy treat (that you can enjoy too!)

Start with plain or vanilla yogurt, and add your dogs favourite flavours, peanut butter, bananas, plain pumpkin, applesauce . .. you are limited to your creativity and Fido’s taste buds! Blend ingredients together and freeze in ice cube trays of paper cups (easy to peel off after), and points for presentation if you decide to add a thin rawhide stick or pizzle stick chewie for a “stick” (handle) for your, um, Fido’s, frozen treat!

Q and A with Yvette Van Veen (Awesome Dogs)

As many of our volunteers, foster homes and adopters know, Ador-A-Bull advocates the use of Positive Reinforcement based dog training for all canine companions. As such, we encounter many success stories, questions, and arguments about styles and methods of dog training. Lucky for us we work with an amazing local trainer who a registered Animal Behaviour Consultant and a syndicated columist (Toronto Star), who was more than happy to answer a few of the most common questions we receive, and shed some much needed light on the dog training industry!

Can you please let us know your background, education etc in terms of dog training?

I began working with animals well before I can even remember. The first dog I “rehabilitated” was the next door neighbour’s German bred and German trained guard dog when I was 6-years-old. It would charge at the fence line and quite frankly, I wanted it to like me. So I’d sneak into the cupboards and bring it sugar cubes. Before long it would run out to see me tail wagging. Of course, I was eventually caught and the neighbours were not pleased. Just goes to show how a few treats can go a long way though.

Dog training wasn’t a common profession, so although I tried to find information on schooling, it just didn’t exist when I was in high school. Instead I completed a college program relating to administrative work. After which I worked in the banking sector completing courses in insurance and brokerage.

During this time my husband and I began fostering puppies and my passion for training was rekindled. I began apprenticing and going to seminars. And I also began taking courses – some of those at the University of Western Ontario. Currently I am registered as an Associate Animal Behaviour Consultant with the I.A.A.B.C.

Are all dog trainers required to have these qualifications? And if not, what are they required to have?

There are no educational requirements for dog trainers. There are no industry standards. It pains me to say that not even criminal background checks are required. Sadly it is legal for someome charged with animal cruelty to call themself a dog trainer.

However, there is one regulated title. That is “Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist.” It requires at least a master’s degree in a related field plus additional certification. Owners have to be careful. Titles such as “dog psychologist”, “behaviorist” or “canine behaviourist” are not the same. Those times all mean the same thing – dog trainer. There are no regulations for any of those titles.

Owners might also see other titles from various organization such as “Certified Pet Dog Trainer or C.P.D.T.” Owners need to look at the organization that does the certification to see what testing is required, if any. It’s not to say that they are bad. It just means that owners are in a buyer beware position. Belonging to an organization may mean a test was done, as in the case of the C.P.D.T., or it may simply mean that the person purchased a membership which happens with quite a few training organizations.

To cut straight to the chase we get a LOT of people who watch shows on TV, and come to us saying it is proper and important to be the “boss” of your dog and be the dominant/pack leader in the house, could you please explain why these ideas of how to treat a dog are not effective in terms of good behaviour foundations and an overall relationship with your pet?

I’m a crossover trainer. Which means that when I started training I used many of these methods. However, I was never satisfied with the results. Sure, at first the dog seemed to stop misbehaving. But I was always on the watch because those behaviours kept creeping back in. It’s because the dog is behaving because “big brother is watching.” Take the pressure off, and all the nasty stuff comes back. When I started using positive reinforcement – and using it well – I noticed the dog kept behaving well. It was doing the right thing because it wanted to obey.

That’s not to say people should give up being the dog’s boss, leader, teacher. The problem is that many trainers who advocate dominance based training suggest that being a good leader means one should poke, push, kick, scruff, jerk on the leash or otherwise use pain and fear.

I can’t imagine any person tolerating such a boss, teacher, coach or leader. Put the shoe on the other foot. If you can replace “dog” with “woman” and it sounds wrong, it probably is. For example, “My dog must submit.” What if my husband said, “My wife must submit”? It sounds horrifying. You can substitute husband, employee or any other person who is forced to be at the bottom of the pecking order. Dominance training only sounds good if you’re not the one at the bottom.

How does it hurt a relationship? I would rather have a dog voluntarily give me respect because I have been a kind and gentle leader. I believe in commanding respect, not demanding it. In the end, I don’t have to worry about aggression stemming from retaliation.

Becoming a good leader is a skill. Let all that negative energy go and the success and results are so amazing. The dog and owner start working together as a team. And yes, the human is usually the leader. But a team none the less. It takes a very confident owner to let go of control to gain control. Sure it’s easier to blame the dog and say it’s dominant rather than saying, “I need to train better.” But the results are so worth it.

We have also heard that according to these “famous” trainers one should not use food reward based training but rather use physical correction or punishment. We disagree with this! Can you please elaborate as to why reward training is more effective than these other methods?

It always amazes me when people say such things. Any time I have met such trainers and heard such blanket statement I ask them to provide research to back up their claims. Not once have any of them had any research.

The opposite is true. There is research and it shows that people are generally far more satisfied with the results of positive reinforcement based training. Positive reinforcement training triggered fewer aggressive responses than force based training methods. Methods such as clicker training triggered zero percent aggression. While some common force based training methods triggered aggressive responses in more than 30% of dogs. That’s a big difference.

When you’re working with bully breeds in particular, these aggressive responses need to be avoided. People already see many breeds in a negative light because of breed bias. Anything that triggers aggression needs to be avoided or it just reconfirms such erroneous stereotypes.

In your experience are there studies/data to back up certain training methods?

I have posted many research study links on my website AwesomeDogs.ca. As more research becomes available, it will also be posted on the website. Owners should always ask trainers to back up their statements of fact because there’s a lot of old wives tales still circulating.

Does what people feed their dogs impact a dogs behavioural well being?

Theirs is some research out there that indicates that protein levels and such can affect levels of aggression. So I generally recommend moderate amounts of protein.

Where the other items are concerned, I’ll be honest and say this is just my own personal opinion and observations. Garbage in tends to mean garbage out. Just like you can’t function effectively on a poor diet, I suspect that dogs cannot function at peak performance on a lousy diet. By the same token, I don’t think owners need to get obsessive or spend their whole salary on food. But feed a diet of real food and ingredients you understand even if it’s a good quality kibble. Avoid cheap fillers such as processed grains, sugars, artificial preservatives and colours. Some of those items may not be harmful, but they are taking space away from nutrient dense foods that your dog needs.

You might find that switching to a nutrient dense food saves you money. Serving sizes tend to be smaller. So make sure you compare the price per serving rather than the price per bag.

Rescue Needs You

Its seems as though, every year, the warmer the weather, the more calls come into rescue of dogs needing immediate change in living arrangements.

This week alone we were contacted regarding a stray female and several persons needing to surrender their dogs for all kinds of reasons.

Having recently taken on Bayne, Mae and promising to return for Dilbert from 1 shelter alone, our foster homes are unfortunately at capacity and we are having to turn down these pooches.

So, I ask you, what is stopping you from committing to a foster dog? Its temporary and all costs are covered by the rescue (including supplies, food and vet care). Dogs are matched to foster homes keeping in mind resident pets and children.

Let us know whats holding you back. Lets to work together to rescue one, until there are none.

Bayne & Mae

Welcome Bayne and Mae, to the ADR family! Both of these super sweet kids passed their assessments with more than flying colors.

Bayne is a young male who needs a foster home that will put him through a bit of "foster boot-camp". This cuddle monster is just itching for some rules and boundaries. Great with other dogs and came from a home with kids. He is going to be a REALLY cool dog.

Mae is a sweet and petite blue female, about 4 months old. She was surrendered to the shelter with a fractured femur - most likely from being kicked by her previous owner (charming). She is great in her kennel, so crate training should be a breeze. This girl needs a quiet foster home, where she can rest and get well.

Last month (May 6th), Ador-A-Bull held our first (annual?) "Anything is PastaBull Dinner". Having recently taken on a litter of 9 (beer) puppies, we desperately needed to raise funds for their veterinary care and transport. What better way than dinner and dessert in the company of friends and rescuers.

We are so thankful to all who purchased tickets, donated, bid on the raffles, etc.

Special thanks to "grandma" for cooking such a delicious meal.

Meet the newest addition to the ADR family, Neko!

This handsome black/chocolate brown hunk was found by a TO police officer, who happens to be a bully owner, wondering behind a theater without collar/tags/microchip to trace back to his owner.

Neko is a well mannered boy - about 1.5 years old. He is good in his crate, gets a long with other dogs and is now looking for a foster home that can teach him what toys are and how to play.

Neko is a happy go lucky chatter box who is looking for nothing more than someone to cuddle with while we find him his perfect forever home.

Another beer pup saved! Pretty little Stella flew out of OnScario today.

Before being loaded up in her kennel (full of blankets and her favorite toys), she snuggled with her chauffeur and gave kisses to all the staff members at WestJet cargo!

Upon her arrival, Stella was met by our East coast rep and didnt waste any time introducing herself.

Stella was also welcomed home by her family - including young children who had no idea their new puppy was coming home today. What a great surprise for them :)

Keep on smillin' - happy girl! And enjoy the freedom OnScario couldnt offer your sweet face!

April was quite the month as far as adoptions are concerned. We are so happy (and proud) to report that 6 of the 9 Beer Puppies have been moved to safety out of province and that 4 are now in loving forever homes.

Most recently our big goof Mooooose and Beer Puppy Amstel were moved out East and were welcomed into their new homes.

It was a bit of gong show, but all the kids are now fully vacinated and ready to be shipped to their forever homes on the East Coast.

We're ready to start sending Beer Puppies to their forever homes in NS, but we need your help.

Please let us know if you (or someone you know) are traveling from ON (London, Hamilton, Toronto) to NS (Halifax) and can take a pooch with you.

All you have to do is make a quick call to the airline (Air Canada or West Jet) with the crate dimensions/weight and tack on the "cargo" to your ticket (we cover the costs).

We meet you at the airport with the pooch, do the check in/inspection with them, and then when you arrive in NS a volunteer meets you/the dog there!

We do everything! You just travel as normal, and maybe add a few extra minutes on either end of the trip for formalities.

If this is something you might be willing to do, email us with travel dates/times.

Fostering - The Good & Bad News

We are always greatly in need of foster homes!

Fostering requires a time commitment of 1-3 months for young dogs and 6-8 months for those that are a bit older. ADR covers all food and veterinary costs, your donation is an open heart and home to help a rescued angel on their way to a Happy Beginning!

Now for the good/bad news:

Bad News: We're not giving just anybody a dog. There is a screening process including an application, phone interview and home check.
Good News: That means we're picky (both in the people who care for our dogs and the dogs themselves). All dogs are temperament tested and vetting is done before (or arranged ASAP after taking on your foster dog). We take into consideration your work schedule, children and resident pets when choosing the place a foster dog in your home - and strive for a perfect match.

Bad News: We're most likely not showing up with a well kept dog. He's probably going to smell like a shelter and will eventually need a bath once given a bit of time to settle.
Good News: It's going to feel extra nice to cuddle him when he's clean and dry.

Bad News: Once your foster dog gets past the "honeymoon" period, he may display some habits that may not be desirable.
Good News: An ADR rep will always be available to see you through these rough patches. We've been rescuing for years and have seen and heard it all (that wasn't a challenge...). A few of us have apprenticed with some super savy trainers and will work with you to overcome any training obstacles.

Bad News: After the mandatory 30 day holding period (which gives you and us time to learn the dogs personality), he will be posted for adoption, and eventually the perfect creature that you've work so hard training and have fallen in love with, will find the perfect forever home, and will leave your family for his own.
Good News: You are welcome to be as involved as you'd like in the adoption processes. We will screen all potential adopters fully and since you know the dog best, will be able to give us your opinion and say on the dogs forever family.

Moose - Available for Adoption (Outside of Ontario)

Meet Moose! Or MoOoOoOse as we like to call him. Hes a BIG KID for an 8 month old pup, and had lots of love to give and smiles to share. Yes, this boy literally smiles.

Moose also like to execute his basic commands like sit and down with great enthusiasm! With a cock of the head, flip of an ear, big smile, a grunt and exaggerated paw movements we cant help but giggle when Moose is around. He is a very smart boy and a very quick learner as well! Moose will be a ton of fun in training class for sure! (and probably the star of the show . . .were just saying ;)

Sherlock-Moooose can often be found with his nose to the ground. He is very inquisitive and likes to smell EVERYTHING! But dont worry, hes not the type to (ahem) identify what he has found as his, his foster mom says he is perfectly housetrained! AND, a big fan of his crate! (good boy Moose!)

Not a huge fan of the cold (can you blame him with such a short coat), Moose does enjoy a good warm car ride, and will sit in the back seat like the gentleman in training that he is!

Moose is wonderful with everyone he meets, but a typical over excited teenager when getting together with doggie friends (this will just take more time and exposure) but good none the less. He loves to walk around with his toys and show you his treasures, but will happily give them up for a cookie or three!!! Mind you, youd barely know you were feeding him because Moose has such a sweet soft mouth.

He is a very special dog, and everyone involved in his rescue (including our vet staff) cant say enough good things about him!

Nibbles - Available for Adoption (Outside of Ontario)

Meet Nibbles!

At approximately 1.5 years old, Nibbles found her way to ADR by way of a shelter that had to take her from her owner due to current Ontario laws (actually a blessing for her as his intent was to breed her and she was suffering from a tail injury). Prior to entering ADR’s foster care the shelter decided to have Nibbles’ “happy tail” (when the tail wags so much it whacks on everything and constantly splits open making a BIIIIG mess, and can be painful to the dog . . ) amputated. Unfortunately this procedure was done by a less than savvy vet and poor Nibbs had a bit of recovery ahead of her . . there was not enough tail taken away (so she has a rather large stubb) and not enough skin left to cover the bone. At this time the tail seems to have finally healed! But at no point did any of this even phase the sweet wiggly-Nibbly tempermant of this dog!

Nibbs (as we affectionately call her) is currently in foster care with several adult dogs (male and female) and a young pup, and is the best of friends with EVERYONE!!! Toys, treats, bones, are all there to share and enjoy with her buddies! For this reason we would love Nibbs to go to a home with another doggie friend. That, and she is also a very high energy type pooch, so a friend to play and wrestle and run with would be idea! So either way, Nibbs is going to need an ACTIVE family, with an ACTIVE lifestyle.

All that being said, during her downtime Nibbs is a great cuddler, and is very good and curling up on the couch for some much deserved love! (have we mentioned how much we ADORE this kid?!)

Nibbles is crate trained, and rides quite nicely in the car. Who wouldn’t love peeking in the rear view mirror and seeing those hilarious ears poking up out of your backseat?!!!

To know her is to love her . . . so much so we had to talk her foster momma out of trying to keep her!

Nelly - Adopted

We rescued our sweet smoosh faced girl Nelly following a surgery, performed by a clinic through the shelter she came from, for a lame back leg. This arrangement was made because the shelter understood that ADR could not afford to have this surgery done on the poor pooch.

The procedure was a femoral head ostectomy.

A couple months post-op, Nelly still was not using that leg. Upon further investigation, it was discovered the surgery was done incorrectly. As a result of not being used, her muscles went into atrophy.

Despite the terrible pain, Nelly was still cuddles and kisses for all people (and pooches) she met.

Funds were raised for corrective surgery and Nelly met with a trusted orthopedic surgeon, who, upon examining the leg, suggested we try physiotherapy before putting Nelly through another invasive (and costly) surgery.

We were referred to Four Paws Canine Fitness and Rehab with Heather Kennedy (our saving grace), who set us up with a therapeutic exercise program which included electrical muscle stimulation and low level laser therapy. Within the first couple of weeks we were already seeing a noticeable difference and as the weeks went on Nelly became a completely different dog!

As Nelly's foster mom, I am sad to see her go, but so very excited and happy that Nelly found a family just as special as she is. Make us proud little shadow!
